How to register you new vehicle

  • The vehicle can be insured on its chassis number as soon as you purchase it, (check with your insurance company)and then the registration number added to the policy after 30 days.
  • The next step is to gain a UK MOT, again using the chassis number. The DVLA will issue a new one once they give you a registration number.
  • The registration fee is paid to the DVLA, this is currently £50. If the bus is pre-1972 road tax is FOC. After 1972 roadtax will be payable

  • Proof of the vehicles manufacture date must be given, this can be obtained from the Volkswagen museum, or from a valid pink slip ( american V5) this is to allow an age-related plate to be issued.

  • Up to two forms are then needed, application form V55/5 (from a Post Office or VRO), and Customs and Excise form 389 (this is needed only if the vehicle has been imported from outside the EEC).
  • An appropriate age related UK registration number is then issued.
